The start to the Billabong Pro Teahupoo proved difficult with shifty conditions and the advantage going to the veterans. Speaking of veterans, its been a busy few weeks for Mick Fanning since the incident at J Bay and being bombarded by media. Hell, even on his first surf back in the water he had the 60 minutes camera crew and received another friendly visit from a shark. That didn’t slow him down when it came time to get the scores in round 1 however. Posting up a 5.50 and a 6.67, Mick combo’d his way through the heat. In the post heat interview Fanning stated, “It was great to get back in the singlet and focus on surfing again. There’s been so much hype about the incident in J-Bay and so much media attention and I just want to move on.” And then there’s the burning question of a world title on the line… “I feel pretty confident but you know theres so much that goes into a world title. Luck of the waves, you gotta be on at all times, and then you got equations with other competitors but I guess you just focus on yourself and just try and do the right things at the right time. Thats all you can really do.”
